Joint Stiffness

Due to the natural ageing process or simply day to day tasks, our joints can become stiff and sore. Osteopathy incorporates a holistic approach to medicine, viewing each patient as a whole and aims to improve your overall mobility. You don't need to be in pain to get benefit from seeing an osteopath.  Call us now to talk about how we can help.

Headaches

Headaches are complex - there are many potential causes, however commonly they are due to muscle tension in the neck or upper back and can be treated very effectively through osteopathic medicine. Your osteopath will ask you a series of questions to determine whether your symptoms can be safely and effectively treated through manual therapy and will always refer to other health professionals if osteopathic treatment is not appropriate.

Sports Injuries

As we all know, injuries in the sporting world are very common and can be extremely frustrating. All we want to do is get back out there and continue doing what we love. Depending on the severity of the problem, active patients usually respond quickly to osteopathy. Your osteopath can give you advice on how to manage your pain effectively, and let you know what you can do to enable a swift recovery.

FAQs

You’ve Got Questions - I’ve Got Answers

Will I need to undress?

Depending on the issue, providing you are wearing appropriate, loose fitting clothing, I can often perform treatments without the need for you to undress. However osteopathic diagnosis and treatment involves observation as well as manipulation, movement and massage and in order to receive the most effective treatment, it is often recommended that you remove some items of clothing.  Your privacy will always be respected and I use screens and towels when necessary.

Will you "crack my neck"?

One of the many techniques I use is manipulation of the joints in the spine. It is common to hear a 'popping' sound as the restricted joints release. I take a full case history prior to treatments and will assess whether this technique is safe and appropriate for you. You should expect ongoing communication with your osteopath to conform with the legal requirements of informed consent and no techniques will be performed without your prior approval. I pride myself on my gentle approach and will only use these techniques if I feel they will be of benefit.

How many sessions will I need?

Osteopaths believe your body is a self healing mechanism.  The aim is not to 'fix' you but to enable your body to fix itself.  Therefore, I aim to get your body back to a pain free state as quickly as possible and without the need to keep returning for more treatments.  I like to see all patients at least twice and based on my assessments, will give you a recommendation regarding how many treatments your condition will need on a case by case basis. In general, pain that has been there for a long time takes much longer to sort out so the sooner you book an appointment the better! I will never continue a course of treatment if there has been little or no benefit after 3 sessions and will give you advice on what other means of therapy may be appropriate.  In the best possible way, my aim is to not have to see you again!

How long do treatments last?

Initial consultations will last approximately 45 minutes.  Follow up appointments will be shorter and last about 30 minutes.

Is it safe?

Patient safety is regarded as paramount. During our initial consultation I will ask you a series of questions regarding your past medical history to establish whether there are any potential risks of continuing with osteopathic treatment. Osteopathy is a regulated profession so by law, all osteopaths must be registered with the General Osteopathic Council. All osteopaths must complete continued professional development to comply with the registration process and hold full professional indemnity insurance.

Will I feel worse afterwards?

It is common to feel some increased pain for up to 48 hours after treatment.  This is due to the treatment stimulating an inflammatory healing response from your body.  The pain can be eased with the application of ice or heat packs (I will advise what is best) or simple mobility exercises which I will prescribe.  If you are concerned, please call me and I will advise the best course of action.

How can I pay?

I take cash or card payments. Alternatively I can email you an invoice and you can pay through online banking.

Where can I park?

If you see me at my home clinic there is ample parking.  If you see me at Little Green Refills in Market street (Thursdays), parking is available in the Brewery Yard car park opposite, or in Morrisons at the end of the street.

Other questions?

I'm always happy to talk to you about any other questions you may have or discuss how I can help your condition. Feel free to call me on 07498 972334 or email Ben@intuneosteo.com.  I'm often with a patient or out and about on the family farm so if there is no answer please leave a message and I'll get back to you as soon as I can.
